Google handles gambling phenomenon with India's leading fintech app

After being removed by Google for violating the gambling ban policy, Paytm insists it "will be back soon". This Indian fintech app tries to assure users that their money is still safe.

Google has removed popular Indian fintech app Paytm from its Play Store, for violating its no-gambling policy. Google announces: "We do not allow the existence of online casinos or illegal forms of sports betting."

"The prohibition applies to both the case of the application that leads users to an external website, where they can participate in paid tournaments to win real money prizes. It's a violation of our policies," Google explained.

The notice did not name Paytm, but according to the marginal exchange, Google confirmed the removal of the fintech app due to a policy violation.

Chinese guests at home, Macau lose 'Asian gambling capital'

Two months after China loosened travel restrictions to Macau, casinos in the "Asian gambling capital" remain cold and grappling with plunging revenues.

According to Bloomberg, after five months of exhaustion because of near-net sales, casinos in Macau expect Chinese visitors to massively pull in during "Golden Week." Starting from China National Day on October 1, the "Golden Week" holiday will last up to 8 days.

During the annual "Golden Week", the Asian gambling capital attracts twice as many visitors as the population of this special administrative region. However, hope is fading. Most casinos are empty, cold. Macau authorities now expect only "Golden Week" to attract 500,000 visitors, or 50 percent of last year's figure. This will be a very disappointing result with the economy in recession up to 68% in the second quarter.

Lost to Las Vegas and Cambodia

Bloomberg quoted expert Ben Lee of consulting firm IGamiX as noting that the September revenue of Macau casinos was only 11-14% of last year's figure. Linda Chen, Vice President of Wynn Macau, admits the Macau gambling industry only hopes to achieve revenue of 30-50% last year during "Golden Week."

"No one expected sales to recover immediately. We only have a step-by-step way and achieved sales in part last year. A successful 'Golden Week' will help change people's views on travelling to Macau," Chen stressed.

Those figures are bleak considering that casinos in the U.S. gambling capital Las Vegas reached 60 percent sales in the same period last year in July after reopening in June. In Cambodia, a new Asian gambling center, NagaCorp sales reached 90% of pre-epidemic levels in August.

This situation has raised investor concerns about Macau's future. Sales of Macau casinos have declined since before the outbreak of the pandemic, partly because of competition from other gambling centers in Asia such as Cambodia, a declining Chinese economy, and political instability in Hong Kong.

China International Capital analyst Shengyong Goh explained: "Macau recovered slowly due to its domestic visitors being mostly mainland Chinese visitors. The Covid-19 epidemic has exposed Macau's thorny problem for years. It's an economy that's too dependent on tourism and gambling."

According to travel companies, macau tourism demand has plummeted because of new regulations for mainland Chinese tourists, for example testing negative for the novel coronavirus. If a new outbreak breaks out, China could immediately restore border controls, so visitors would face the risk of being stranded in Macau.

Thai PM orders to stop online gambling

Recently, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha ordered the Ministry of Economy and Digital Society (MDES) to block 1,202 online gambling websites within 15 days.

NDT 1,000 billion leaves China, flows into gambling and betting every year

China's Ministry of Public Security admits criminal gangs quietly transfer huge amounts of money out of the country to re-invest in gambling and betting.

According to the South China Morning Post, Liao Jinrong, Director General of the International Cooperation Department of China's Ministry of Public Security, discloses at least 1,000 billion NDT ($146.5 billion) flowing out of China, into gambling and betting activities each year, ingnning financial and economic security risks.

Mr Liao said gangs organising illegal gambling and betting use cryptocurrencies to collect and transfer money abroad. This tactic makes it difficult for Chinese security to trace dirty money and crack down on criminal behavior.

Mr. Liao did not give specifics on cash flow. However, he said, these activities would undermine China's economic security. In a country of 1.4 billion people, gambling and casino activity is illegal.

Payment vulnerability

"There are a lot of casinos overseas. They will carefully examine the background and assets of many individuals, entrepreneurs and stakeholders in China. This is not safe for us," The Beijing News quoted Mr. Liao as quoting him.
